Clinicians

Debbie Bibb
Creating the Ultimate Trail Horse
www.debbiebibb.com
(719) 748-8543

Debbie BibbBased at Running D Ranch in Florissant, Colorado, Debbie Bibb is a trainer and clinician with more than 30 years of horse experience. Debbie graduated from the John Lyons Trainer Certification program in Parachute, Colo., in 2001 after 6 months of study under both John and Josh Lyons, for which she used her two horses, Classy and Cheyenne. Now, as a nationally recognized horse trainer, Debbie knows one thing remains the same throughout the equine world - all horses have the same basic instincts and thought processes that can be used to teach any desired skill. Her Building the Horse of a Lifetime™ training program is especially designed to educate both horse and rider so that the two may work together successfully.

For the Rocky Mountain Trail Riders Conference, Debbie presents her program, Creating the Ultimate Trail Horse, in two arena sessions each day. Her topics will cover:

  • Preparing Your Horse for the Trail (Friday)
  • Problem Solving on the Trail (Saturday)
  • After the Trail Ride (Sunday)
  • Trail Obstacles (One session every day)

Debbie's goal is to improve the relationship a person has with his or her horse while achieving better performance through patient, gentle and consistent training methods. She trains a wide variety of horses at her ranch and conducts demonstrations and clinics to teach people her training methods. Debbie has experience in both English and Western disciplines and enjoys teaching horse owners of all experience levels.

She believes that the key ingredients of horse training are focus, patience, consistency and timing. If you have focus, she believes, all the other ingredients come together: "If you are focused, you are waiting for even the smallest positive change in your horse and thus gain patience. With focus, you also gain the consistency and timing that are critical in success with your horse." Debbie believes that using these training principles, a person can have the best horse they've ever had - the horse of a lifetime.

Always a true professional, Debbie is constantly striving to increase her training knowledge. She continues to study John and Josh Lyons' new developments in training, and also studies other trainers’ and clinicians’ methods in search of anything she can take away to improve her own program and help others with their horses.

Debbie has always had a passion for horses - from a horse-crazy little girl to an adult who is still amazed by the power and beauty of horses. Her education with horses began at age 5 when her parents bought her a horse and she started taking riding lessons. In addition to owning horses, she participated in 4-H and Girl Scout horse programs while she was growing up. Later on, she studied as an Equine Science/Pre-Vet major at Colorado State University, led horse packing trips and taught packing in the Wyoming back country and graduated from the Colorado Outdoor Adventure Guide School near Cripple Creek.

Debbie also strongly believes in giving back to the horse community. She supports equine rescue groups by offering demonstrations and clinics to use as fundraisers and special training assistance for rescue horses. With the help of United Animal Nations, Debbie and her husband, Mark, rescued their Percheron colt Zeb from the Premarin foal auctions in Canada.

Nicole Carswell, TWHBEA National Clinician:
7th-heaven@kih.net

Nicole Carswell, TWHBEA National ClinicianNicole Carswell, the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeder’s and Exhibitors’ Association’s National Clinician, brings more than 15 years experience to her presentations on training and riding gaited horses.

Nicole earned a degree in Animal Science from Morehead State University and has continued to expand her knowledge and teaching experience.  She has instructed many World Champion riders and has trained several horses which went on to win World Championships.

Nicole has ventured into other areas within the Walking Horse Industry, specifically judge’s training and certification.  Nicole played a vital role in the first judge’s Equitation Certification offered, having organized and provided implementation for the curriculum.  She also served on the judge’s education panels for the National Horse Show Commission and TWHBEASM.  Nicole has held an NHSC AAA Master judge’s license with certifications in pleasure, equitation, and versatility, and currently holds the same license with the TWHBEA. She was instrumental in forming the TWHBEA Instructor Certification Program and helped design the TWHBEA Academy Program.

Her expertise has allowed her to travel extensively, to such places as Liche, Germany, where she officiated the first judge’s certification for European judges and Alperin, Germany, where she judged the European Championships.  In 2007 Nicole led the first European Youth Riding Camp in Wemding, Germany.  Nicole travels to Melbourne, Australia every other year to participate in Equitana Asia Pacific and to provide clinics at Emerald Valley Farm in Victoria, Australia.

Nicole authored the first book written on horsemanship for the Tennessee Walking Horse rider, A MATTER OF PRIDE. She also created a new video, “EQUITATION AND SHOWRING PRESENTATION.”

Public events are the top priority on Nicole‘s schedule each year; she presents at horse fairs, clinics, breed demonstrations, and seminars throughout the country.  Her clinics cover horsemanship, training, gait recognition, trail safety, equitation, and show ring preparation.

Heidi Nyland, MS
co-presenting with Julie Goodnight on Sunday

Heidi NylandNyland started riding Ponies of the Americas at age 5. In college, she was president and later assistant coach of the Ohio Wesleyan University Equestrian Team. Keeping active as a rider and riding instructor, Nyland became a licensed Brain Gym® instructor—an international program based on whole brain and active learning, www.braingym.org. At the same time she began her equine journalism, marketing and photography career (she’s an author of the Western Horseman Legends series and has stories and photographs published in Western Horseman, Horse & Rider, The Trail Rider, Equine Veterinary Management, America’s Horse, and American Cowboy through her Whole Picture business, www.wholepicture.org) Nyland started using Brain Gym’s simple movements to help her 4-H horseback riding students relax and achieve their goals in the saddle. Nyland is now an instructor with the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA®). She also works with well-respected trainer Julie Goodnight, acting as her marketing director and producer for the RFD-TV Horse Master show. Nyland is excited to share news with fellow riding instructors and horse owners—taking every opportunity to teach how solid horsemanship training and Brain Gym techniques can help any rider achieve any horsemanship goal.

Mike Kevil:
www.equineyouaskedforit.com

Mike Kevil“I’ve learned something from every person and every horse I’ve ever met . . .” This statement sums up the way Mike Kevil thinks. Often referred to as the horseman’s horseman, Mike has made a remarkable career observing, identifying and reasoning things through, then teaching what he’s learned to both horses and people.

Since the 1970s, Mike has been starting colts for some of the world’s great horsemen. His clients have included the likes of Shorty Freeman, Al Dunning, Don Dodge, Matlock Rose and Gene LaCroix, to name a few. The disciplines for which he has prepared young horses include everything from reining, roping and cutting to jumping and Arabian Park. Today, seventy-five percent of Mike’s business comes from other trainers who send him colts to start and problem horses to fix.

Before the modern day term horse whisperer and the training practices that terminology denotes came into vogue, Mike was a master practitioner of this art. His style of patient, steady training, with an emphasis on understanding the horse, rather than forcing it to blindly yield, set him––not all that long ago––in a class by himself. Today, in a world where more and more horse trainers and amateur enthusiasts are using methods similar to Mike’s, this horseman remains at the head of the class, beside the very best in his field.

At the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo, Mike will give five clinics on a few of the topics about which he’s an expert. In one presentation, he’ll talk about Nature vs. Nurture. In another, he’ll compare Natural Horsemanship with Traditional Training. In a third, he’ll explain How the Horse Learns. In his fourth demonstration, Mike will examine The Importance of Timing and Feel. And in the fifth, he’ll talk about The Problem Horse.

Mike is the host of the popular new RFD TV show, Equine You Asked For It, an interactive program that invites viewers to suggest its content and even to participate. If you have an interesting story or a training question, you can send it to Mike at equineyouaskedforit.com.

Ken McNabb, Discovering the Horseman Within

Ken McNabbKen McNabb is a nationally acclaimed clinician and RFD-TV personality, whose show on RFD-TV, Discovering The Horseman Within, which is entering its much anticipated third season. With a program based on more than 25 years of experience in the saddle, Ken has spent the past 10 years teaching thousands of students in clinics from coast to coast how to become better riders and trainers themselves. Strong family and Christian values form the foundation for every aspect of Ken’s training program, and he believes that any rider and horse can find their best potential given the right opportunity.

Ken's sessions at the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo promise to be outstanding. His topics include:

  • Groundwork Solutions for Problem Horses
  • Communication Cues in the Saddle (Using seat, legs, hands)
  • Solving Problems in the Saddle
  • Using Your Body to Control Your Horse’s Speed
  • Spook Proof Your Horse
  • Trail Tips: Handling Obstacles

Ken McNabbKen grew up about 30 miles north of Cody, Wyoming. He took his first “ride” when he was 10 days old, and, like most kids who grow up on ranches, Ken was working cattle and training his own horses while still in grade school. Throughout high school, he picked up extra money breaking colts for neighbors.

Ken offers a unique environment where the horse is trained using the best methods, and the rider is coached to bring his or her personal best into the arena. Ken’s faith in Christ, along with his commitment to strong family values and patriotism, helps make him the kind of speaker/trainer people enjoy. Ken is pleased to share with the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo audiences the depth of knowledge his lifetime of training, coaching and riding has given him.

Parelli Expo Team
Solving Mysteries, Adding Fun to Horse-Human Relations
www.parelli.com

The Expo Team from Parelli presents these fun and informative programs:

1)  The Seven Games
Know the games horses know, and learn to respond to them effectively

2)  Horsenalities and how they impact you!
Have you ever wondered why your horse can be as calm as can be and then it seems without warning turns into a bolting, jumping, spooky, afraid-of-everything kind of horse? What about the horse smart enough to unlock every gate but apparently unwilling to do anything you want? Solutions to these and other mysteries will be revealed during this session.

3)  Learning the language of the horse
Why is it that when we want to go left our horse wants to go right? We want our horse to stand still and all he can do is move around? Is there a reason why my horse goes the other way when I get to the pasture? This session will help you discover your true potential by helping you understand how to communicate clearly with your beloved equine partner.

4)  Liberty for fun!
When you watch horses in the pasture, what do you see? They run, jump, chase, hang out, scratch on each other--it all looks like so much fun. However, when you appear, and unless you have a lead rope, your horse just walks away! You have seen people do round pen stuff but then what? In this session you will learn to play as horses play without ropes and round pens. You will learn how to live your dream and what a wonderful, fun dream it can be!

5)  Riding with confidence
Good riders make riding look so easy, but it is not uncommon that the thought of riding just scares you do death! You convince yourself to get on but with every breath the horse takes, you tense up so tight you just know there is impending doom! How can you work through this? In this session you will “reveal your horse” and discover your potential—and learn how to really live your dream!

Mike Ross, Using the Horse’s Own Power

Mike RossMike Ross believes in Horse Power. Whether he’s turning a young colt loose for his first turn in the round pen, or swinging a leg over the saddle on a troubled veteran, he uses the horse’s own power—or as Mike see it, the horse’s free will—to build the horse’s confidence and skills. His proven method leads to horses that have “learned to learn,” meaning they are willing and ready for any discipline or use. Mike will demonstrate key elements of his Horse Power methods at the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo in Denver.

In Mike’s experience, a horse in training usually starts out either panicked or perplexed, and grows through stages into trust, respect, understanding, and ultimately, partnership with the human. Mike’s methods use the best aspects of natural horsemanship, versatility training and even what Mike calls “cowboy dressage” to give horse more understanding and rider more enjoyment.

Karen Scholl, Horsemanship for Women:
at Rocky Mountain Horse Expos!

Karen Scholl & BergWith almost 20 years of study in psychology-based horse training and 10 years instructing courses and clinics, Karen Scholl brings a unique perspective to the horse industry with her program, Horsemanship for Women.

Karen describes that, “Horses look to the leadership qualities of other horses for survival, and because most women are not taught leadership skills from an early age, it’s very common for us to become fearful or frustrated with our horse.”

By traveling all over the country teaching courses, Karen offers safe, supportive clinics where women learn the skills to communicate with their horse with lasting results. Even the husbands are impressed!

Karen Scholl & BergKaren’s formal education includes many years of teaching technical courses for Intel, an AA Degree in Equine Science, 3-Star Parelli Instructor certification, and former President of Parelli Natural Horse-Man-Ship.

“I’ve had extensive study in psychology-based horse training, and because I didn’t grow up with horses, I completely relate to the challenges so many women face. At the completion of every clinic many say that they are no longer afraid of their horse!” Karen says, “It’s the most rewarding thing I can imagine doing for people.”

Tools designed to adjust for the limited strength of women and free safety video downloads are just some of the opportunities Karen offers to help women gain more confidence, feel safe and have more fun with their horses.

“My greatest desire is to help people have even more enjoyment with their horse by expanding their communication skills”. As an educator Karen’s commitment to the horse industry is strong and supporting venues of continuing education for today’s horse owners is a key component.

Visit Karen’s website, www.karenscholl.com or call Karen’s office at 888-238-3447 for more information and scheduling.

Dr. Jennifer MacLeay
The Science of Natural Horsemanship

Two trainers achieve similar results, even though their methods seem to be polar opposites: How can this happen? The answer is a matter of nature being guided with scientific understanding. According to Dr. Jennifer MacLeay, Associate Professor of Large Animal Internal Medicine at Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, it’s much less about the trainer’s style than about having a good understanding of equine science. When a trainer honors the underlying fundamentals, the horse will learn.

In daily arena sessions, Dr. MacLeay will demonstrate the elements of science-based horse relations. Her “Science of Natural Horsemanship” topics include:

  • Friday: Horse and Human Body Language
  • Saturday: How Horses Learn Through Positive and Negative Reinforcement
  • Sunday: Behavior Shaping

Dr. MacLeay will teach how to peaceably establish dominance, understand how horses learn, understand how human behavior influences the horse's behavior, and how to incorporate these skills in training the horse.

In addition to Dr. MacLeay’s degree in veterinary medicine, she possesses a PhD and is Board Certified in Veterinary Internal Medicine. Dr. MacLeay has spoken on horse behavior and learning at the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo and for the American Association of Equine Practitioners' Healthy Horses Workshop. She is also author of the book, Smart Horse: Training Your Horse with the Science of Natural Horsemanship.

Rick Lamb | Author and TV/Radio Host of The Horse Show
www.thehorseshow.com

Rick LambRick Lamb was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas. He had a passionate interest in horses from an early age but few opportunities to be around them. Instead, he focused on music, turning pro at the age of 14 and fostering talents that he would repeatedly call upon in the coming decades.

As a teenager, Rick operated a newspaper route and became an Eagle Boy Scout. While in college, he played music in night clubs and worked days at the city library. In 1973, he graduated cum laude from Wichita State University with a double major: Math and Philosophy.

After graduation, Rick programmed mainframe computers for several years before starting a commercial audio recording business, Lambchops Studios, in Phoenix. During the next two decades, he wrote and produced countless pieces of music for broadcast commercials and won several awards for his work.

In 1990, Rick married long-time friend, actress Diana Baines, and in 1997, they launched The Horse Show with Rick Lamb, a weekly syndicated radio program. The program quickly found an audience on radio and the Internet, and was joined by The Horse Show Minute, a daily radio feature, in 1999.

By 2003, Rick had racked up six industry awards for his radio shows, had started emceeing live events, and was appearing occasionally on television and video. That year he also landed a contract for his first book, a joint project with Dr. Robert M. Miller titled The Revolution in Horsemanship. As the year came to a close, Rick began playing music again, this time with veteran singer/guitarist Jay Casmirri. Today The Blenderz play publicly whenever their busy schedules allow.

2005 brought three more industry awards for The Horse Show and Rick's second book, Horse Smarts for the Busy Rider. 2006 ushered in a new era with Rick's move to television on RFD-TV.

A confessed workaholic, Rick enjoys nothing more than being immersed in multiple creative projects. He and Diana live in Phoenix with three horses, Candy, Savannah, and Sarah, and a black cat named Angus. They have three grown children, sons Ryan and Todd, and daughter, Blair.

Dr. Penny Lloyd
(719) 650-2572

Dr. Penny LloydDr. Penny Lloyd is interested in healing at the deepest levels of transformation. Her passion has always been to help the animals. But she has come to learn that our external world is a reflection of our internal state. Only by taking full responsibility for our own well being can we best influence the health and happiness of those around us.

When we are at peace, we bring peace to the world through thoughts, words, and actions. Thus providing an environment conducive to healing extends beyond medications and bandages. The manner in which a treatment is applied can be more powerful than the actual treatment method. True healing is available to each of us. We all have the potential to positively influence those around us. That includes our beloved creatures.

Dr. Lloyd continues to learn that inner alignment is the key to true healing. It is a continual, fascinating, humbling, empowering, and infinitely rewarding practice. Each time we notice discomfort, an opportunity for freedom presents itself. By facing patterns of resistance, we can transmute blocks, and return to our natural state of well being. By helping ourselves, we help others. Those closest to us are most readily influenced. A healthy vibrant life is created from the inside out.

Animals are our greatest models of conscious living. Dr. Lloyd considers herself fortunate to have spent her life learning from these congruent creatures. When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. And Dr. Lloyd has found that the lessons continue to deepen. Each interaction with an animal has the potential to be a sacred, mutually beneficial creation. Working amongst conscious beings is a catalyst to awakening our own healing presence.

Dr. Penny Lloyd earned her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1984 and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Saskatchewan Canada in 1988. She did post graduate work at both Purdue University & Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospitals in the Equine Ambulatory Departments, teaching veterinary students. Dr. Lloyd attained her certification in Acupuncture from the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society in 1994, & Chiropractic by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association in 1995. She has undergone advanced professional training in Sports Medicine, Homeopathy, Chinese Herbs, & Dentistry. Trail Riders Conference:

Bonnie Davis
Low-Impact Horsecamping & Trail Riding

Bonnie Davis, Low-Impact Horsecamping & Trail RidingBonnie Davis is an equestrian trails advocate, freelance writer, and consultant with more than 40 years experience. Her stories, articles, and columns have been published in national and international publications such as Western Horseman, Paint Horse Journal, Horse & Horseman, Quarter Horse Journal, Western Side (Italy), Cascade Horseman, California Horse Review, Performance Horse Review, and San Jose Mercury News. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she owns Two Horse Enterprises, an trail riders’ supply source for books, maps and equipment.

With a strong expertise in horsecamping and trail riding, Bonnie is returning for the second year as keynote speaker at the 4th Annual Rocky Mountain Trail Riders Conference where she will speak on “Horsecamping—Expanding Your Trail Riding Adventures.”

Bonnie is a consulting editor to “The Trail Rider” magazine and presents lectures, clinics, and workshops throughout the nation. She also works with various agencies such as National Park Service and the US Forest Service on horsecamping and trail riding environmental concerns. In fact, she wrote the NPS brochure, Taking Your Horse to a National Park, which deals with the use of certified weed free feeds; she has also designed horse camping facilities.

Bonnie believes that if horse owners (especially the baby boomers who have become the largest segment recreational riders) are not equipped with the knowledge on how to camp, take care of a horse in camp, etc. to meet environmental regulations and just plain common sense, we will lose horse camps and access to trails. Besides access issues, Bonnie sees that people who buy the trailers, buy the horses, buy the tack and then take off camping are the future of the overall horse industry -- if they have a bad experience they will not camp or trail ride!

Horsecamping allows one to ride and ‘see the country’ without the need for additional pack stock.  But to horsecamp enjoyably and preserve the environment, one has to know what to do, how to do it and where to go. "Horsecamping -- expanding your trail riding adventures" will help to educate trail riders and horsecampers about the newest requirements, techniques and methods to meet regulations and environmental concerns so horsemen will stay safe, have good experiences, and be continue to be welcome on public lands.
