Clinicians

Gerrie Barnes
www.barnesranch.com

Gerrie BarnesGrowing up on the lower west side of Cleveland, there was not a horse or cow in sight. Just a golden colored horse up on a hill that the family would drive by on the way to picnics in the park.

Two careers preceded her current life chapter: Teaching junior high, high school, and community college; and, developing, owning, and selling a successful employment service.

Gerrie BarnesStaring at retirement at age 45, Gerrie reviewed her options: inside activities, outside activities – how about horses? In her usual over-achiever manner, she pointed her focus on these beautiful, powerful animals and there was no turning back. Over the years she has learned from the best clinicians in the country and taken both English and western riding lessons. As her skills grew, she became a certified CHA instructor along with growing a quality horse business based on her understanding of effective educational techniques and adult learning. A step-by-step approach with an emphasis on small successes for both the horse and rider are combined with an environment of safety and positive support. Recently, she was tapped as a finalist for the international CHA award: Instructor of the Year.

With an MA in Counseling, Gerrie is able to help riders with confidence and fear issues. She also assists riders in understanding the natural differences between men and women’s approaches to handling horses. Learning about horse instincts and horse behavior enables each person to better relate to their equine partners.

Gerrie is primarily responsible for the Barnes Ranch VRH Skill Building Program for Rookies.

Jeff Barnes
www.barnesranch.com

Jeff BarnesBorn in central Illinois, this small-town boy first learned about horses with a friend's feisty Shetland pony. Graduating to helping round-up and re-train the wintering dude ranch horses, Jeff advanced his horsemanship skills until he left Illinois to work in the construction industry in Arizona. Jeff assisted an outfitter with horseback hunting trips into New Mexico's wilderness areas. Moving to Colorado added cattle work, cattle drives, roping and branding to Jeff's skills.

The 2002 advent of the new Versatility Ranch Horse event caught Jeff's interest, bringing together a life-time of horse experience. By 2004, he had put an RMQHA Ranch Horse Champion on one horse and by 2006 he had put an RMQHA Ranch Horse Champion and Supreme Ranch Horse Champion on another horse.

Jeff BarnesJeff is primarily responsible for the Barnes Ranch VRH Skill Building Program for Intermediate-Plus riders and horses. With an emphasis on safety, his favorite expression is, “that’s a good place to stop”. Helping riders understand what’s best for the horse builds stronger partnerships between horse and rider which results in riders stepping up to higher performance levels.

During their Expo clinic, Skills for Versatility Ranch Horse, Jeff and Gerrie will work with clinic riders learning the Foundation Maneuvers while offering performance riding tips. Clinic riders will practice the Ranch Riding class, the Ranch Trail class, and will work with cattle in preparation for the two cattle classes. Learn the “cow/horse dance” so you can practice this effective maneuver without having cattle available.

Debbie Bibb
Building The Horse Of A Lifetime™
www.debbiebibb.com
(719) 748-8543

Debbie BibbBuilding The Horse Of A Lifetime™, one horse and one owner at a time.

Debbie has developed her Building The Horse Of A Lifetime™ training program to emphasize three essential elements of training the best horse you have ever had: Communication, Relationship and Performance. Debbie’s program works for any horse, regardless of breed, age, personality or past experiences. The principles also work for riders of all levels – from beginners to advanced riders.

Debbie has appeared on The Horse TV Channel and Rick Lamb’s radio show and has been featured in Western Horseman, John Lyons’ Perfect Horse Magazine and AQHA’s America’s Horse Magazine showing her trail horse training techniques.

Debbie conducts clinics covering a variety of topics, including Creating the Ultimate Trail Horse, Trail Dressage, Colt Starting and more. Her clinics provide an excellent forum for learning hands-on with your horse while watching other participants as each develops that special relationship. Debbie is based at the Running D Ranch in the mountain valley of Florissant, Colo., but offers clinics and demonstrations nationwide.

Debbie BibbDebbie has worked with a great variety of horses. Her true passion though is helping owners develop their relationships with their horses above and beyond the owners’ greatest expectations. “Nothing is more enriching to the soul than helping others realize their dreams.”

About her programs for the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo, Debbie says:

I believe that it is the trail horse that is most diversely challenged and one of the most under-rated talents in the equine industry. My mission is to bring recognition to not only the challenges of trail riding but to help people take their trail riding to the next level. Whether that is in a trail competition or riding with friends, it is the trail horse that needs to be the most versatile of equine athletes.

Seminar #1: Trail obstacles and the principles of escalation. In this seminar, a series of obstacles that focus a desired skill are arranged in order of difficulty. Understanding where your horse’s skill and confidence levels are is the focus of this seminar. No matter what training we do with our horse, it is important to not over-challenge our horse and to build their confidence through a series of progressively more difficult obstacles. This ensures we’re always preparing our horse for the next thing we’re going to ask him to do.

Seminar #2: Trailer loading without a trailer. Many horse owners board their horses at stables and do not own trailers. In the event that they wish to go beyond the stable and ride on a trail or in the case of an emergency, their horses are not prepared to load in a trailer. In this seminar I teach people how to prepare their horse for loading into the trailer by using a series of obstacles that teach a horse the skills necessary to load into a trailer. These skills that can be taught and practiced with common items found around any stable.

Don’t miss Cody Crow in the Paddock Arena all three days at the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo.

Ryan Gingerich

Ryan GingerichFrom his days riding his “stick horse” and playing the Lone Ranger to the animals on his grandfather’s Indiana farm, Ryan Gingerich has had a love of horses that seems to transcend the normal horse and rider relationship. His ability to get into “the mind of the horse” allows him to rehabilitate horses others have decided are hopeless. He often says there are no bad horses, only bad training.

Ryan began his professional horse career as a trail guide. His love affair with the horse then led him to complete a national certification program where he continued working after graduation. His ability to work with troubled horses was put to good use there and he continued to develop the bond with these horses that today has him branded as “The Behaviorist.” This title is well earned not only through his natural ability but through study and the application of scientific research into horse behavior. Ryan frequently refers to Dr. Andrew Mclean, Director of the Australian Equine Behavior Centre. Dr. McLean was so impressed by his communications with Ryan that he paid his own way to the United States to work with Ryan in person. They continue to share knowledge.

Ryan has developed his training program, Connective Horsemanship, using a marriage of science and tradition. His five elements of Connective Horsemanship offer a simple language for the rider and the horse. These five elements consist of Basic Control, Lightness, Rhythm, Line and Connection. This language uses a technique Ryan calls exclusivity which requires that the horse need give only one response to one cue and when used correctly leads to “deletion” of incorrect behavior. This eliminates confusion in the horse and owner helping both to relax and learn. Ryan uses this technique to rehabilitate horses with behaviors that range from bolting and bucking to being buddy sour. His method crosses all disciplines and is used at his National Equine Behavior Center in Troy, Missouri to rehabilitate every breed of horse from off-track Thoroughbreds to Quarter horses.

In Denver, Ryan’s programs will be:

Friday: Observation, Evaluation, Plan and Act – Rehabilitation of a Problem horse
Watch as Ryan uses O.E.P.A. to rehabilitate a problem horse. He’ll work one-on-one with the horse and owner to identify the problem and create a plan of action. Plus, learn tips and techniques for rehabilitating the same problem at home! YOU can fix this bad behavior and Ryan will SHOW YOU HOW!

Saturday AM: Observation, Evaluation, Plan and Act – Rehabilitation of a Problem horse Saturday PM: Trail Riding Problems and How to Fix Them
Is your horse buddy sour?  Barn sour?  Will not cross water?  Jigs on the trial?  Will not walk to enjoy the ride?  Does your horse freak out at nearly all objects on the trail?  Do you avoid ditches and hills in fear?  YOU ARE NOT ALONE!  YOU CAN FIX THESE ISSUES!  Ryan Gingerich “The Behaviorist” will take you through the process. Ryan will be using his own horse for this demo.

Sunday AM: Taking the SPOOK out of a Spooky Horse
Does your horse spook at bags, blankets, clippers, umbrellas and more? Watch as Ryan’s walks you through his method for calming and controlling a spooky horse. Taking into account the horse’s natural instincts and learning behavior, Ryan will give you a step-by-step method for success! Ryan will use his own horse for this demo.

Sunday PM: Observation, Evaluation, Plan and Act – Rehabilitation of a Problem horse

Art Kiger

Art KigerArt Kiger started his romance with horses at a very early age. Like most young boys, Art had a pair of pearl handled cap guns, cowboy boots, and a lone ranger mask. With a stick horse in hand, Art always seemed to lope in and save the day. Family members jokingly remember a little white tornado.

By the time Art had reached junior high school, he was starting to break horses with his father, for their neighbors and friends for extra money. Throughout high school Art's dad planted a seed that started to take root: “There has got to be a better, gentler, safer way to break a horse” was the seed that began to grow in this young man's mind as he began his journey of professional horsemanship, “his passion.” In 1996, Art decided to set out on his own, with his father's words engraved in his mind and a love for horses in his heart. Art’s romance with horses quickly grew into a passion that led him to jobs with horses playing a key role, from full time work at feed yards, day work for ranchers, full time horseshoeing, to taking in outside horses for training, none of which satisfied his own desire for something more.

Art KigerIn 1999, Art married his high school sweetheart, Selena. Art knew that she was one of the missing pieces that was beginning to help his life make sense. Selena, also a horse lover, encouraged him to pursue his dreams and ideas and promised to support him every step of the way. In their third year of marriage they welcomed home a little girl, Dusti, and eighteen months later a boy, Cinch.

Art and Selena are truly blessed because of their love for each other as well as their own two “little tornados”!! Art was starting to understand and come to terms with many things in his life: his walk with his Savior Jesus Christ, the value of his family and friends, and not living each day for his own quest. In those small yet powerful lessons Art was being led not only to better himself as a horseman, but to share his knowledge and experiences with others in their own journey. Art continues to live out his faith and love for horses every day, spending his days training himself to be a better man in the eyes of the Lord and a better horseman in the eyes of the horse. Art Kiger Horsemanship offer clinics to assist all levels of horsemen. Let Art help you “Find Your Passion.”

Art Kiger's Expo Schedule:

  • Friday : Advanced maneuvers with drive lines.
Friday : Using drive line principles while riding
  • Sat : Mind, Body and Collection
  • Sun : Stops, Rollbacks and 360's

Bob Olson
Program: Hitching Horses

Bob OlsonBob Olson resides on his ranch in Black Forest, Colorado. Bob has been training and working with horses of all types and sizes for over 40 years. He conducts Driving Schools at his ranch, as well as at other locations. He also trains horses for clients and works with them and their horses when they need evaluation, or a problem solved. With his common sense approach, his clients learn to “get along/partner-up” with horses. He works at building confidence, with the emphasis on safety as a cornerstone—all in hopes of helping the horse avoid becoming the victim in the hands of inexperienced owners.

Bob has been featured in the Western Horseman, Country, The Draft Horse Journal and Small Farmers Journal magazines. Bob has had the honor of working with clients from all over the United States, Canada, Norway and Mexico.

He has shown in hitch competitions and performed in exhibitions, throughout the state, as well as judged driving shows in Colorado and Texas. He contends that he is still learning and that horses teach him nearly daily.

Both Friday and Saturday during the Expo he will be conducting a Harnessing and Hitching Seminar, covering harness, collar, hame, fitting and adjustment, on both a single horse and team. Included will be hitching a single and team as well as a question and answer period after un-hooking. Bob's website is www.olsoncarriage.com and he can be reached by phone at 719-495-4486.

Curt Pate
"Effective Stockmanship"

Curt PateAlthough there are many popular horse clinicians today, not all are career cowboys and even fewer are cattle producers – true Stockmen. Curt Pate from Newell, SD is both. Curt practices as a rancher what he preaches in his clinics. Consequently, this Montana native’s methods clearly support a rancher’s “for profit” mindset as he understands the increased economic benefits of handling stock correctly. During his colt starting demonstrations and low-stress livestock handling clinics you will often hear Curt say: “I believe that low stress actually causes high performance!”

Although he has been invited to conduct demonstrations in multiple countries for more than 15 years, it is Curt’s wide variety of talents and experiences that enable him to communicate his methods so effectively. Along with horse and stockmanship presentations and managing his own ranch operation, Curt was chosen by The American Quarter Horse Association to serve as an AQHA Professional Horseman as well as their Regional Experience Clinician.

Curt’s impressive resume also includes time spent as an auctioneer, rodeo announcer, bronc rider and technical advisor for Hollywood.

Tammy Pate

Tammy PateTammy Pate was literally raised on horseback.  Born into a ranching family in Montana, her father was a rodeo steer wrestler who spent his free time teaching young Tammy and her sisters all he know about horsemanship and riding.  Her grandmother, Betty, instilled in her the deep values of the ranching life: a reverence for nature and the practical skills ranching families needed for the demands of their rural life.

She married her husband, Curt Pate, who was then a rodeo announcer, and followed him into the demanding life of managing a cow camp.  Together they developed innovative, gentle ways of training horses and managing livestock.  During this time, she raised her own children, literally, in the saddle, carrying them with her on horseback to work with Curt on the ranch.

These rich experiences, along with a growing interest in the benefits of Yoga on the equestrian body, have led Tammy to share horsemanship knowledge. Tammy's clinics are designed to bring awareness of  mental and physical balance, and above all,  improve your horsemanship.  Everything you will do at the clinic is designed to gently bring about the inner balance that improves your ability to bond with and communicate with horses.

What you will learn from Tammy Pate:

  • How to increase your Inner Balance

  • How to be in the proper frame of mind before training

  • How to work on yourself in order to work with your horse

  • A situational approach to riding in the wilderness

  • The behavioral aspects of horse training

  • Ranch culture

  • How to ride safely in the wilderness

Jason Patrick

Jason PatrickAll of Jason's childhood was spent horseback. Jason grew up on a ranch owned by his family in the Yampa Valley of the Colorado Rockies, near Steamboat Springs. During those years the ranch never owned less than 30 head of horses. As a 10 year old Jason had 5 horses in his "string" and they were all worn out by the end of the summer. Jason was hired for the first time to train a horse by longtime Colorado rancher Jack Orr; Jason was 12 at the time and has continued the business ever since.

Jason was very fortunate growing up to ride with some exceptional horsemen all over the country. When Jason was a teenager he got the opportunity to work in Northern California and see some exceptional natural horsemen completing everyday ranch work. Jason was hooked and has been on a journey to improve his horsemanship ever since. Jason's goal is to be an exceptional horseman by the time he's 80 years old.

The “New Beginnings Colt Starting” will be held for several hours daily in the Stadium Arena, so visitors can get a realistic look at the slow and steady work that goes into giving a young horse a sensible and wise start. If things get a little bit Western—and why wouldn’t they, with 10-12 youngsters together in the arena?—then the event won’t just be informative. It won’t just be exciting. It will be fun!

Karen Scholl, Horsemanship for Women:

Karen Scholl, Horsemanship for WomenWith a background of almost 20 years teaching how to shape the behavior of horses using equine psychology, Karen Scholl has developed a safe, fun and effective format that has a special appeal for women. Horsemanship for Women addresses the three most common issues many people experience when it comes to horses: Establishing leadership, building confidence and gaining mutual trust with horses.

Women are especially challenged when it comes to establishing the leadership position with a horse. By understanding the culture of herd dynamics, the horses can teach us the difference between aggressive versus assertive, being kind versus being a wimp, and the ultimate bond horses naturally form when they recognize the qualities of leadership in us.

The base of study is in Karen’s video series that has been recognized as one of the better explanations of both herd psychology and effective techniques with horses. Hands-on courses are also offered throughout the United States and Canada to accelerate the learning process, and her highly educational web site, www.karenscholl.com features Karen’s ‘virtual tour’ where she personally explains various aspects of her method on short video segments.

Accessing a method designed to instantly expand those qualities horses understand and are naturally attracted to can strengthen the bond with any horse in any given situation -even the unexpected. And with Karen’s outstanding explanations, you’ll be able to do it yourself... guaranteed!

Ruben Villasenior

Ruben VillaseniorRuben lives and trains from his facility in Benton City, Washington situated in the heart of the Columbia Basin wine country with his wife, Isela, daughters Aliya and Elyse and son, Mario. He produces several clinics a year and provides riding lessons.

The Villaseñor name has long been associated with good horsemanship. If Ruben Villaseñor is anything, he is a student of the horse. Before assuming the title of “clinician,” he is first and foremost a horse trainer. His style is simple and eternal, to develop the movement of a horse and its athletic ability. To make the horse supple, relaxed, flexible and obedient.

If this sounds a bit like dressage, well, it is. Dressage for everyone. Although dressage is a term that simply means “training,” it is a higher degree of training that the average equestrian often avoids. This is unfortunate. Villaseñor hopes that through his “Horsemen’s Western Dressage,” all horse owners will discover and reap the benefits of a timeless discipline. (From an article written by Catherine Madera for Northwest Rider Magazine, July 15, 2007)

He is one of the few clinicians of our time who is known for his superb skills in communicating and motivating people as well as his astounding natural abilities with the horse. He believes that “It’s Never, Ever the Horse’s Fault” and his training methods reflect that belief. Charles is one of the few trainers specializing in re-schooling horses with often-severe issues.

His relaxed, warm and amusing character has made him a great favorite at clinics and demonstrations. We receive hundreds of letters and e-mail each year commenting on how approachable Charles is for his audience, and how much practical information participants took home and were able to use with their own horses successfully – seeing results right away. His motto “Success Through Knowledge” reflects this training philosophy that the owner should learn alongside the horse.

Charles WilhelmCharles has been seen weekly on RFDTV. Charles also writes monthly columns for Riding Magazine, Ride! Magazine, Northwest Rider, U.S. Horse Market and Thoroughbred Digest. His book “Building Your Dream Horse” was published in 2005 and his new book “Starting Baby Jaz” was released August 2006. He also offers an ongoing series of educational DVDs.

Moses A. Woodson
Crescent A Farms Horsemanship

Moses WoodsonMoses A. Woodson was born in Tennessee and spent his childhood moving back and forth between Tennessee and Colorado. His parents, Moses Sr. and Mary Woodson, were missionaries on the Native American reservations of the Four Corners region of the Southwest.

Being farmers from Tennessee, the Woodson family has always had a deep connection to horses and to the farming and ranching way of life. At times when the family did not own horses and ponies of their own, Moses spent his time learning from those around him who did. He also read all the horse-related literature he could get his hands on.

Living in the Four Corners area gave Moses a great opportunity to learn from the ranchers in that part of the country. When he was thirteen, his family moved onto a commercial cattle ranch, where he learned the cowboy way of life and experienced a kind of horsemanship he had only read about.

Moses married a girl from the Southwest area. Polly A. Woodson is Navajo; after they married, they moved to the Navajo reservation. While living there, Moses learned to catch, work with and train the wild horses that run free on the reservation. He also worked with many of the area families and ranches, doing day work such as branding, gathering cattle and starting colts.

Moses’ horsemanship education was further advanced when he went to work on the Browning Ranch in Farmington, NM. Bob Browning’s genuine understanding of the horse made Moses want to become not just a better trainer, but a true horseman.

When Moses and his family moved back to Tennessee, he started training horses and found a real need for a horse trainer who could teach horsemanship to first-time horse owners. Today, Moses teaches his own brand of horsemanship, traveling the country doing clinics and demonstrations for anyone willing to learn.

Moses has a humble saying: “I don’t know everything, but I know what I know, and I know it works.”

Find the answers!

  • Learn to observe and evaluate your horse’s movement.
  • Explore simple body work techniques that unlock the potential of your horse.

Deb Elsner and Diana Landin have developed a four part program designed to improve the performance of your horse and build your abilities as a rider.

In part one of our program, presented at this year’s Horse Expo, we’ll teach you how to observe and evaluate your horse’s movement on the ground to identify physical issues that can become mental or emotional issues. Then we’ll show you how different problems in the muscles such as striations, swelling/heat/cold/scar tissue, tears, and armoring actually feel. Finally, we’ll explore simple body work techniques that will help unlock the potential of your horse.

You really can find out how to encourage your horse’s supple, willing and balanced movement. We hope you will join us in discovering just how this work can build a better, stronger relationship with your horse.

Deb Elsner has a BA degree in education. She taught school for many years, ran a daycare center and now teaches riding lessons, does clinics, trains and starts horses, and runs camps. She has been riding for 18 years and believes that the horse deserves our understanding, communication, softness, patience and leadership. Deb’s goal is always to build a better partnership.

Diana Landin has been an NMT (Neuromuscular therapist) since 1988, she has been directing her own Pilates and Manual Therapy studio for 13 years, specializing in post rehab recovery and fitness training. She teams up with Deb to present clinics as well as share the training of horses at Deb’s facility.

Thomas N. Tweeten, Ph.D.
Program: Practical Topics in Equine Care

Thomas N. TweetenDr. Tom Tweeten is a scientist with more than 40 years of experience in Analytical Chemistry. He has worked with industrial chemicals, personal care products, and human and animal nutrients to develop chemical testing procedures to insure product quality and integrity.

About fourteen years ago Dr. Tweeten and a couple of young entrepreneurs began developing a line of horse care grooming products. Since Dr. Tweeten is a horse owner and show competitor, he has worked to create products that are healthy and beneficial for his horses, while achieving the aesthetic results he wants. Dr. Tweeten’s experiences enable him to focus on developing a way to properly prepare and groom a horse so that it is beneficial to the animal. Through his presentations you will learn effective grooming techniques that contribute to horse comfort and will help build communication and trust between you and your horse. He will also show what grooming tools you will want to include in your tack box to maintain a healthy appearance of your horse.

Dr. Tweeten grew up on a working horse farm in southeastern Minnesota. He returned to working with horses when his children were old enough to ride and enjoy them. Tom and his family own Tweeten Edgewood Stables, a small horse farm in Prior Lake, Minnesota. You can find grooming articles published by Dr. Tweeten on the ATH Science website. Listen to interviews with him on Speaking of Horses (www.speakingofhorses.com).

Presentation 1: Equine Care for Comfort & Communication

Preparing your horse for a ride or workout is a time for the rider and horse to focus on each other, get to know each other and build trust and respect. I will share my thoughts and ideas on how grooming care will prepare both the horse and rider for an enjoyable time together both before and after the ride. You will begin to have a deeper appreciation of how to help your horse feel good and look clean.

Presentation 2: Solutions & Tools for a Healthy Horse Coat

I will be talking about different types grooming ingredients and their impact on the grooming process. I will compare and contrast the human grooming process to the horse grooming process. The tools, techniques, and materials that will be demonstrated are effective for both thick winter coats and lighter summer coats. In addition, the process that will be shown can also decrease the time needed to body clip your horse.

Presentation 3: Hooves, Manes & Tails—Practical Ideas for Routine Care

I will share techniques I have developed to care and maintain my horse manes, tails, and hooves. I will talk about protecting tails in order to help them grow and have a flowing appearance. Time will also be devoted to showing how to care for the legs and hooves including getting them ready for the show ring. The presentation will also include an emphasis on the safety aspects of working with a horse’s tail, legs, and hooves.

Presentation 4: So, Now You Have a Horse

I would especially like to address issues that people have that just purchase a horse for the first time or are now fully responsible for a horse that was part of their child’s life for so many years. I will be working with a horse to demonstrate various aspects of safe and effective horse care. Through this process, the horse and rider can begin to focus on each other. The goal is to get both the horse and the rider to soften and relax in preparation for the riding activity.
