Bring in the handiest cowboys from America’s most legendary ranches, add the finest horses and livestock, mix ‘em up together, and what do you get? The most exciting reality show in the West, the inaugural Denver Championship Ranch Rodeo, held in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo.
photo credit: Bert Entwistle The event is sanctioned by the Working Ranch Cowboy Association (WRCA). Aiming to “preserve the heritage and lifestyle of the working cowboy,” WRCA rodeos include only bona-fide horsemen hailing from genuine working ranches and skilled in all aspects of ranch work. “These are the folks who feed America,” says WRCA spokesman Mark Bukowski. “The true cowboy is an ambassador for the land, and his primary responsibility is to keep his horses and cattle healthy. You might call him a ‘veterinarian on horseback.’” Bukowski sees the Ranch Rodeo as a great opportunity for folks to meet and enjoy seeing the top hands in the country ride for their brands, using practices honored since the first cattle drives swept across the plains.
But it’s not just about our Western history—it’s about old-fashioned Western fun, too.
Harry Vold Rodeo Company, Producer Denver Championship WRCA Ranch Rodeo
The Harry Vold Rodeo Company is a legend in the world of rodeo. A breeder of rodeo stock since 1951, Mr. Vold has often been honored for the quality of his animals, which have performed regularly at top events such as Cheyenne Frontier Days and the National Finals Rodeo. While ranch rodeos are a relative newcomer to the world of public rough stock competition, Mr. Vold supports the trend wholeheartedly. “Ranch Rodeo honors an important tradition,” he says. “We shouldn’t lose sight of it.” Ranch Rodeos test cowboys to their limits, and stock contractor Harry Vold admires the cowboys who compete in them. “Ranch Rodeo is completely different from PRCA Pro-Rodeo events,” says Mr. Vold. “This is the working cowboy, wearing everyday clothes and being tested on what he does on the ranch all day, a-saddle and with a rope.”
Vold Rodeo Company's headquarters are located on a 30,000-acre ranch 25 miles southeast of Pueblo, CO. The Vold family owns some of rodeo's most respected bucking horses and also operate a bucking horse breeding program to help ensure that, year after year, its rodeos feature the best animals the sport has to offer. Such dedication has earned Harry Vold the PRCA's Stock Contractor of the Year award eleven times.
Craig Cameron presents Extreme Cowboy Race™
Denver Rocky Mountain Horse Expo
National Western Conference
March 13-15, 2009
WHAT IS THE EXTREME COWBOY RACE™?
The Extreme Cowboy Race™—as seen on RFD-TV—is a timed and judged race through an obstacle course that is designed not only to push horse and rider teams out of their traditional “comfort zones,” but also to test communication between horse and rider and the horsemanship skills and athletic abilities of each competitor. Spectators will find the competition exciting and entertaining to watch while contenders will address the challenges of the race in pursuit of cash, prizes and the title of “Extreme Cowboy Race™ Champion.” At the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo in Denver, Colorado, Craig Cameron will conduct his Extreme Cowboy Race™ on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the event.
A LITTLE BACKGROUND:
The Extreme Cowboy Race™ was originally created by Craig Cameron along with Ryan Dohrn of HorseCity.com to challenge typical reality TV shows with an infusion of horseback riding thrills. Craig Cameron has designed and hosted five race series at his Double Horn Ranch in Bluff Dale, Texas, since 2005. Each season Craig Cameron assembles an impressive roster of competitors from around the country who compete for the title of Extreme Cowboy Race™ Champion. The Extreme Cowboy Race™ spans fifteen 30-minute episodes featuring horse and rider teams as they complete the various rounds of the race course. The Extreme Cowboy Race™ airs on RFD-TV and is also available on HorseCity.com for those who do not get RFD-TV. DVDs of the recent shows are also available for sale through HorseCity.com and Craig Cameron Enterprises.
OBJECTIVES AND JUDGING
The Extreme Cowboy Race™ will be a timed event during which the performance of each horse and rider team will be judged on each obstacle for quality of horsemanship. For each obstacle, judges will award performance points on a scale of 1-10 based on the following criteria: horsemanship, cadence, control, horse’s attitude, and overall execution. Horses and riders will be required to complete each obstacle within a given time in order to receive points. If an obstacle is not completed within the given timeframe, the contestant will be flagged and must move on to the next obstacle. Times will be translated into points, with the highest overall point score winning the race.
PRIZES
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers. Prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the final phase of the race on Sunday.
HOW TO APPLY
The Extreme Cowboy Race™ will be open to riders age 18 years and older and horses of all breeds. All horse and rider teams will compete against each other; there will be no “divisions” based on gender or age. To receive an application, interested riders may email us at doublehornd@lipan.net, fax (254) 728-3081, or call (254) 728-3082. Should you reach our voicemail, please leave your name, number, and mention “Denver Extreme Race” along with your question or reason for your call. Applications are also available to download here.
The entry fee for each horse/rider team is $250. Individual riders may compete with more than one horse in the race, but they must submit a separate application and fee for each horse they wish to enter in the race. Applications, videos, and/or pictures will be received by Craig Cameron who will select the competitors for the race. Applications will be considered until all selected contestants are confirmed.
Once selections have been made, contestants will be notified by phone, mail, or e-mail. Any applicants who are not selected will receive notification by mail along with their entry fee checks. Entry fees of accepted contestants will not be refundable. Any and all videos, pictures, and/or other application materials submitted become the property of Craig Cameron Enterprises and will not be returned.)
